This weeks topic, the presentation of self, although it seemed very confusing at times, once I was able to grasp the key ideas and associate it with something I understood, the ideas became a little clearer.
In this weeks reading, Goffman reveals what he believes are the predispositions of social interaction.
The rules of conduct are an action guide for behaviour that have been deemed suitable. Once these actions are managed and therefore encouraged by social implications of not behaving in the correct manner, patterns begin to emerge.
Once someone develops their idea of self, there are expectations and obligations that surround their interactions with others, including how others regard and interact with them.
Deference was one of the main focus points. Being viewed as the respect and esteem that is due to a superior or elder, it is almost a form of obedience or submission toward someone of higher regard or authority then that of the actor.
For me, the easiest way to understand the ideas that emerged from this weeks topic was to associate to the 'Fifty Shades' series, which I am sure everyone has heard of, with the key points of superordinate vs. subordinate, avoidance rituals vs. presentational rituals and deferende and demeanour in general. For those who have read the books, they will understand.
Thanks Jess! I love the 50 Shades example!
